Is It Gold?

Is It Gold?

The Star Pin shown is real gold, 14K Gold.  Gold Filled is a laminate in which sheets of real gold are fused to metal alloys. The laminate is usually rolled out afterwards. That means there is a much thicker gold layer than the microscopically thin deposit of gold laid down in electroplating.

Sometimes the gold is so thick in gold filled that it can be engraved without exposing the base layer. When GF is over Silver, it is called vermeille, or vermeil.

There is a BIG difference between the superficial flash of a gold plate surface and the depth of gold filled metal. Gold filled metal is much more durable than gold plate, which will turn color, wear off, and break.

Ask about Barb’s Little Treasures findings in 14KGF as an excellent  alternative to Sterling or real Gold.  You can enjoy the look of real gold at a fraction of the cost.

Porous and Non-Porous

Things to Think About: -by Aaron.    03/23/2024

Porous and Non-Porous

Diamonds, Emeralds, Rubies, etc.,  are non-porous gemstones, meaning chemicals, oils, and water cannot  penetrate them.  While these stones have varying degrees of quality, they all have very tightly packed crystal structures.    Beautiful gems like Pearls, Turquoise, and even Cubic Zirconia are most definitely porous.    When in doubt, don’t clout!  Clean your jewelry carefully so that you may enjoy them for many years yet to be.    03/04/2024

Did you Know…?

Did you Know…?  -by Barb Schumacher, 03/04/2024

If your ear has an infection from wearing an earring with a wire or post, you may be able to take care of the problem with items you already have at home.

Remove the earrings and soak them in a cup with rubbing alcohol or a safe dish liquid detergent and water – just enough to cover the earrings.   Wash your ear lobes with clean soap and water, then apply Neosporin or any Antibiotic Ointment on your ear lobes.  After you rinse the ear wires or posts with clean water, thinly apply a layer of the Antibiotic  ointment on the part that goes into your ear.  In so doing , you move the healing ointment inside the ear lobe where you cannot see.  Put the earrings back on again.   Your ears should be just fine in a day or two!  See a doctor if it doesn’t clean up fast, please.  VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT soak Turquoise or other porous stones in anything!  Take the time to clean the wires or posts by hand and be safe.  Thank you!
