No heavy machinery is allowed in the volcano when men are mining geodes. Everything is done by hand to protect the integrity of the mine. Sometimes it takes days to remove one Amethyst Geode. Sometimes pieces break off in the process, and that is exactly what you see here – a perfect little geode with agate on the outside, a thin layer of white crystals ,and then the color comes in. The layers of agate and the white crystals can be any depth, depending on conditions inside the volcano when it was forming. If you don’t see the white, it is dyed! Anything that forms a crystal always starts white before the gemstone’s color develops.
